People who are currently on Sublocade may have heard that it will no longer be available in Australia as of 11 December 2026. We know this news is worrying, and many people will have questions about what it means for them and their loved ones.
What is happening?
The manufacturer, Indivior, has announced that Sublocade, a long-acting injectable buprenorphine, will be discontinued in Australia. Their decision is based on commercial and operational reasons. It is not because of any new concerns about the medicine’s safety, quality or effectiveness.
The last planned supply of Sublocade in Australia is 11 December 2026. Existing stock will continue to be available while supplies last, and PBS claims can continue until 31 December 2026.
What does this mean if you are receiving Sublocade?
There is still time to plan your ongoing care.
Speak with your prescribing doctor or clinic, they can work with you to discuss your options and develop a plan that meets your needs.
Will other long-acting injectable buprenorphine medicines still be available?
Yes. The current announcement only affects Sublocade.
Buvidal will continue to be available.
Need someone to talk to?
We know that changes to opioid dependence treatment can be stressful, and we know this announcement may create uncertainty for many people. Speak with your prescribing doctor or clinic about your options and next steps, and
if you need further support, your local peer-based Drug User Organisation is here to help.
