Sublocade Will No Longer Be Available in Australia After December 2026

If you are on the Long-Acting Injectable Buprenorphine (LAIB) product Sublocade, you may have heard from your prescriber that by the time 2027 arrives, you will need to make a change to your opioid treatment. 

Indivior, the pharmaceutical company that produces this monthly opioid treatment, has made a financial decision to withdraw Sublocade from several regions worldwide. The list includes Australia, where profit is down due to the high costs of support services, local packaging and transport against the relatively low number of people on prescription. As of 11 December 2026, the last shipment of the injectable will have reached Australia, with enough of the drug available for all those on Sublocade to receive a final dose to take them into the new year. 

AIVL has been assured that the focus is on making the transition from Sublocade less stressful for everyone involved and to ensure the best outcome possible for our community members affected by the changes.

The majority of people on the program are likely to choose to transition to the one other LAIB product on the Australian market. Buvidal, from pharmaceutical company Camurus, is a very similar drug and is appropriate and safe to transition to from Sublocade. 

AIVL CEO John Gobeil said: “For most people, moving to another medication that works in the same way and is also dosed monthly as an injectable might be the best option. But we all have a right to choose how we would like to manage changes in our treatment and some people may decide to start withdrawing from the program with the right support in place. Others who were happy on a product with daily doses may decide they would prefer to return to Suboxone or methadone and should be appropriately assisted to do so”. 

John added this important advice: “Whichever way you want to go, please make sure that you access all the information necessary to support your decision-making process by talking to your prescriber and talking to your peers. That might include finding people in our community who have made the sort of change you’re thinking about and asking how the process was for them.” 

As a final word, he wanted anyone deciding to move off the program to think about their vulnerability to overdose. “If using opiates is on the cards after a period on the treatment program, please take very good care of yourself. Start low, go slow and don’t use alone and make sure to have naloxone with you.” 

The best way to stay in control of the process and move towards the changes confidently is to talk to your prescriber as soon as possible, so they can offer us the best care. All medical professionals prescribing and dosing Sublocade across clinics, medical centres, private practices and pharmacies will be supported by health departments, professional organisations, such as the RACGP and RACP and the relevant pharmaceutical companies.

While there are differences between the two products, with Buvidal not offering the same high doses, lasting power or bioaccumulation offered by Sublocade, the goal is to provide a comparable experience. Efforts have begun to provide prescribers with sufficient information and advice to adequately review and calculate new dosing arrangements.

If you are currently on Sublocade, the sooner you meet with your prescriber to work out the details of your transition, the sooner your mind will be put at rest. Questions you should consider asking include whether there will be any changes in the way you will experience your monthly injection, if you will feel any different on a new medication and how you might compensate for that. You may also want to know what to do if you feel that the new dose is not holding you or if you have side effects including headaches, nausea, insomnia or excessive sweating.

Deputy CEO Ele Morrison, a peer with personal experience of the opioid treatment program, had this advice to support people affected by Indivior’s decision: “If you are on Sublocade or know someone on the medication, you can call your local Drug User Organisation or AIVL to talk to a peer who understands the issues and respects your rights. Giving you clear, evidence-based information and advice to support your healthcare choices is one of the main reasons we exist.”

Ele also reminded community members that “if the process feels harder than it should be or you aren’t sure what to do, think about taking someone you trust to support you or talk to the peers at your local Drug User Organisation. They might be able to give you some tips around representing yourself or even advocate for you directly.”
