The It's Your Right campaign aims to increase uptake of harm reduction, hepatitis C prevention, testing, treatment, and liver health care.

It’s Your Right is a bold, peer-led, co-designed campaign driving progress toward hepatitis C elimination in Australia by 2030. Building on the success of the first iteration of the campaign, It’s Your Right has now expanded its reach across both community and custodial settings.

A bold, peer led campaign driving progress toward hepatitis C elimination in Australia by 2030.

It’s Your Right engages priority populations central to the hepatitis C response, including people who inject drugs and people who are or have been recently incarcerated, with a strong focus on reaching Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in culturally safe ways. Through peer-led, community-driven strategies and partnerships with state and territory-based Drug User Organisations, the campaign uses rights-based messaging that empowers and resonates with the community. Supported by targeted advertising, local partnerships, merchandise, and monetary incentives for hepatitis C testing and treatment.

The co-design process

It’s Your Right utilises a peer-led co-design model for design, delivery and evaluation. This process brings together people with lived-living experience of injecting drug use, hepatitis C, and incarceration with a specific focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representation from AIVL’s member organisations. Grounded in real-world insights of community and those working alongside them, guided by Burnet’s research expertise, this partnership ensures the campaign centres community priorities.

Implementing Partners

Campaign Activities

Each implementing partner is tailoring their campaign activities to meet the needs of their local community. The activities will focus on delivering hepatitis C testing and treatment, alongside harm reduction and liver health education, across both community and custodial settings.

Some example activities include:

  • Expos & BBQs bringing together many people on the same day.
  • Community outreach, including housing/boarding services, rehabilitation and homelessness meal services.
  • Partnerships with Corrections to take the campaign to people who are incarcerated, providing information on harm reduction and hepatitis C testing and treatment.
  • Partnering with services that provide support and transition for people who have been recently released from prison.
  • In-house Needle and Syringe Programs offering harm reduction information, hepatitis C testing and referrals for treatment.
