🌍 Today, AIVL addressed the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Trade’s Inquiry into Australia’s advocacy for the worldwide abolition of the death penalty. 🚨 34 countries execute people for drug offences. 42% of all known executions worldwide are for drug offences. In 2023 alone, at least 467 people were executed for drug offences in just 5 countries. Australia opposes the death penalty for any crime and supports harm reduction for people who use drugs. Yet, Australia’s Federal Police are complicit in sharing information that could lead to executions in other countries. 🔍 What does that say about our values? If we want to truly abolish the death penalty, our actions must align with our words.
