Human Rights and Drug Policy: Summary Report of Project Findings and Recommendations

A recent four-year national research project by La Trobe University has made significant recommendations to reshape Australia’s drug policies. The project advocates for the legalisation of certain drugs and calls for increased funding and support for organisations led by people who use drugs.

Key Recommendations:

  1. Legalisation of Certain Drugs: The research suggests that legalising specific substances can reduce harm and address issues like overdose and the spread of diseases such as hepatitis C.
  2. Empowerment Through Funding: By providing more resources to organisations run by people who use drugs, these groups can effectively advocate for policy changes and participate in reform efforts.

These recommendations align with global shifts in drug policy. In 2019, all 31 United Nations agencies called for the decriminalisation of drugs and a move away from punitive measures, emphasising the importance of human rights in shaping these reforms.

Implementing these changes in Australia could lead to more compassionate and effective drug policies, ensuring that the rights and wellbeing of individuals are prioritised.

AIVL would like to thank Kate Seear, Sean Mulchany and all involved for their work on this project and report. AIVL Deputy CEO, Ele Morrison was proud to speak at the launch of this report and welcome its findings and recommendations.
