One of the cells that we need are the CD4 cells, they are what fight off any invaders in the body that attack the immune system. Basically, they are the army that protects us. HIV attacks and destroys these cells that keep us healthy.
What is HIV/AIDS
You may see HIV/AIDS as one word, but they are very different.
You may have heard about HIV –What is it Human Immunodeficiency Virus.
What does that mean? HIV is a virus that enters the body and attacks the immune system, it fights and kills the good cells that fight infections. This is what we need to fight and to keep us well and healthy. If you do not take treatment the virus will multiply, you won’t have a defense against infections and diseases.
AIDS Acquired Immune- Deficiency Syndrome. AIDS is the progression of HIV. This is when the immune system is so damaged you cannot fight off major infections, you don’t have a defense anymore. The earlier you start treatment the better.
In Australia most people can live a normal life span if you take treatment for your HIV. Treatments are explained later.
This means even if you have HIV, you can plan a long life and do not progress to AIDS.
